In a significant move to bolster regional security and cooperation in the Pacific, Australia and Fiji have entered into a notable defence alliance dubbed the Ocean of Peace. This agreement, supported by A$1 billion in Australian funding over the next ten years, underscores a commitment to enhancing stability in the area. The formal signing took place in Suva, with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his Fijian counterpart, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, at the helm.
Alongside the defence pact, both leaders also endorsed the Vuvale Union treaty, which aims to foster collaboration in various sectors including economic growth, climate change initiatives, healthcare, migration policies, and infrastructure development. The Ocean of Peace alliance entails mutual security commitments, obligating both countries to confer and take action in the face of threats that could undermine their sovereignty, peace, or stability. Australian Prime Minister Albanese highlighted the importance of the alliance, emphasizing its role as a cornerstone for international partnerships and mutual support during times of crisis.
Fijian Prime Minister Rabuka expressed optimism about the agreement, suggesting that other Pacific nations such as Tonga, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand might eventually join the alliance.
