Amidst a backdrop of increasing geopolitical uncertainty, Türkiye and Canada have embarked on a strategic partnership to enhance trade, investment, and security cooperation. The agreement was formalized during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Ankara, signaling a strengthened alliance between the two NATO members, which have shared diplomatic relations for over eight decades.
The newly established three-year action plan, agreed upon by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Carney, focuses on four pivotal areas: trade, investment, and innovation; energy and climate cooperation; defense and security; and government dialogue alongside people-to-people relations. This plan aims to bolster economic connections, encourage mutual investments, advance energy-related projects, and foster collaboration in sectors such as natural resources and emerging technologies.
Central to the partnership is the enhancement of defense cooperation. A memorandum of understanding was signed between Türkiye’s Presidency of Defence Industries and Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, paving the way for partnerships within their defense sectors and the exploration of further collaborative opportunities. The two countries committed to coordinating efforts to enhance peace and security across the Euro-Atlantic region and beyond, with a particular focus on Ukraine, the South Caucasus, and the Middle East, including Gaza.
To ensure ongoing dialogue and cooperation, an annual Türkiye-Canada Strategic Dialogue will be established, along with continued meetings of the Joint Economic and Trade Committee. Additionally, political-military and counterterrorism consultations will be maintained to address shared challenges. Plans are also in place to bolster cooperation on consular affairs, migration, mutual legal assistance, and extradition, alongside fostering cultural exchanges and stronger ties between citizens and diaspora communities.
The foreign ministers of both nations will oversee the implementation of this comprehensive three-year roadmap, ensuring that commitments translate into actionable outcomes. This strategic partnership underlines Türkiye and Canada’s shared ambition to deepen economic and security ties while addressing global challenges and creating fresh opportunities for businesses, investors, and citizens alike.
