In a recent directive, U.S. aviation regulators have mandated that Boeing 737 Max aircraft undergo inspections for potential cracks in a key structural part of the fuselage. This measure is set to impact approximately 471 aircraft, with inspections slated to commence in September. The focus of these inspections is the bear strap, an integral structural sheet that reinforces the fuselage around the jet’s exit doors.
Cracks of a similar nature were previously identified in older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, leading to inspections of those aircraft. Although the 737 Max fleet has not yet reported any such issues, regulators noted that the aircraft is built using a comparable design and manufacturing process. This similarity suggests a risk that the same problem could emerge in the newer models.
Authorities emphasized that any undetected cracks could compromise a critical structural element and potentially threaten the aircraft’s overall integrity. In response, Boeing has been collaborating with airlines on this issue since it first came to light in 2019 and has expressed support for the compulsory inspections. The company assured that these checks are intended to detect and rectify any defects before they develop into severe problems.
This latest directive adds to the ongoing scrutiny faced by the 737 Max series following earlier safety concerns and questions about manufacturing and engineering standards. The aircraft was previously subjected to a global grounding after two tragic crashes occurred in 2018 and 2019.
