Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is working to align state and territory leaders on establishing national guidelines for datacentre developments amid growing concerns regarding the increasing electricity demands and environmental repercussions of the sector. In an upcoming national cabinet meeting, Albanese plans to advocate for legislation that would set uniform minimum standards for datacentres. These standards would ensure that datacentres are responsible for their own infrastructure expenses, mitigate any potential upward pressure on energy prices, and reduce their water usage.
The proposed regulations would also mandate that new datacentre projects evaluate their effects on local communities and be strategically positioned away from residential zones, educational institutions, and essential agricultural or potential housing areas. This initiative arises as Australia’s energy market operator anticipates a significant surge in datacentre electricity consumption over the next ten years. The rise is largely attributed to advancements in artificial intelligence and cloud computing. By the 2035-36 period, electricity usage by datacentres is expected to climb from approximately 5 terawatt-hours to 34 terawatt-hours, potentially comprising 13% of the nation’s total electricity consumption.
There are currently 165 operational datacentres in Australia, with another 225 projects in the pipeline. However, the future of these developments remains uncertain, as numerous previously proposed projects have been canceled. Alongside this, Albanese is preparing broader artificial intelligence legislation that aims to address copyright protections, security measures, safety protocols, and skills development. The government asserts that these reforms will enable Australians to economically benefit from AI advancements while safeguarding creators’ rights and enhancing national security.
The introduction of these new regulations has met with some resistance from state leaders, particularly concerning the proposed renewable energy requirements for datacentres. This opposition adds a layer of political complexity to the challenge of creating a cohesive national framework.
