Furthermore, he noted that severe asthma attacks can lead to a temporary drop in blood oxygen levels, imposing additional stress on the heart, particularly for those with existing heart conditions.

Dr. Jain identified specific groups who might be more susceptible to heart-related issues due to asthma. These include older adults living with asthma, individuals whose asthma is poorly controlled or severe, and those who frequently experience asthma attacks. Smokers, as well as people exposed to second-hand smoke, also face heightened risks, as do individuals with underlying health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, or elevated cholesterol levels. According to Dr. Jain, the presence of these risk factors can further exacerbate the likelihood of developing cardiovascular problems.

On a positive note, Dr. Jain emphasized that effective management of asthma can simultaneously bolster heart health. Consistent adherence to prescribed asthma medications, he explained, plays a critical role in keeping airway inflammation in check and reducing the frequency of asthma exacerbations. By maintaining control over asthma symptoms, individuals can also mitigate the potential cardiovascular risks associated with the condition.
