Australia’s Auto Market Sees Surge: 50% of Sales Are EVs, Hybrids.

In a significant shift in the automotive market, nearly half of the new cars sold in Australia from April to June 2026 were electric or hybrid models. This trend highlights a growing consumer preference for alternatives to petrol-powered vehicles, driven largely by the ongoing instability in fuel prices.

Electric vehicles (EVs) alone captured a notable 21.03% of the market share during this period, setting a new record. The latest figures reveal that sales of battery electric vehicles experienced a remarkable increase, rising from 34,435 units in the first quarter of the year to 69,414 units by the end of June. This surge underscores a robust demand for EVs as consumers seek more sustainable and cost-effective transportation options.

Plug-in hybrids also saw a substantial presence, accounting for 10.58% of the market share. This indicates that, while fully electric vehicles are gaining traction, hybrids remain an attractive choice for those looking to balance traditional and electric driving technologies. The increased adoption of both EVs and plug-in hybrids reflects a broader trend towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Conversely, the market share for vehicles powered by petrol has declined significantly, falling to 50.84%—its lowest recorded level. This decline comes amid expectations of a further rise in fuel prices, following the conclusion of the federal government’s temporary reduction in the fuel excise. As fuel costs are anticipated to increase, this could further accelerate the transition towards electric and hybrid vehicles in the coming months.
