As Canada commemorates the 41st anniversary of the Air India Flight 182 bombing, Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged the nation to maintain vigilance against violent extremism. Reflecting on one of the country’s most devastating terrorist attacks, Carney stressed that the incident’s legacy demands remembrance and a commitment to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
The bombing of Air India Flight 182, also known as the Kanishka, occurred on June 23, 1985, as the aircraft flew near Ireland. The attack claimed the lives of all 329 people onboard, a majority of whom, 268, were Canadian citizens. This somber anniversary was marked by memorial events held across Canada in cities like Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, as well as in Ahakista, Ireland, to honor those who perished.
Prime Minister Carney highlighted the Canadian government’s ongoing efforts to bolster national security. He emphasized initiatives designed to dismantle terrorist networks and combat all forms of violent extremism.
