The tension heightened following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 50% increase in tariffs on select Canadian exports. The heightened duties, set to be implemented on August 19, target a range of products including specific dairy items, alcoholic beverages, motor vehicles, and related goods. Carney condemned these tariffs, arguing that they breach the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and labeled them as another instance of unilateral trade measures by Washington.
While expressing his disapproval of the tariffs, Carney revealed that he recently engaged in a conversation with President Trump. During their discussion, both leaders agreed on the necessity to intensify trade negotiations aimed at addressing and resolving the ongoing trade disagreements between the two countries.
