In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has launched a major drone offensive against Russia, resulting in at least six fatalities and a substantial blaze at a distribution hub near Moscow. Russian authorities reported intercepting 1,478 Ukrainian drones within a single day, marking what they claim to be the highest number recorded over a 24-hour period. These figures remain unverified by independent sources. According to Moscow’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, about 600 drones targeted the Moscow region, with 201 reportedly neutralized. The attack in this region led to the death of one person.
A massive fire erupted at a Wildberries distribution center located near Podolsk, approximately 25 miles south of Moscow’s center. The facility, spanning around 250,000 square meters, suffered severe damage and was rendered inoperative, as reported by Ukraine’s military. Ukraine has increasingly utilized long-range drones to hit Russian military and economic targets that are distant from the front lines. Ukrainian officials have indicated that facilities associated with Wildberries have been targeted due to their alleged use in military logistics operations.
This series of attacks underscores Ukraine’s expanding capability to carry out long-range strikes, while Russia continues to depend significantly on drones and missiles to strike Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. On the Ukrainian side, Russian strikes have claimed at least seven lives, with casualties reported in Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. Additionally, a missile assault on Kyiv resulted in injuries to six individuals and sparked fires, including one at a prominent book market where several businesses reportedly lost all of their stock.
In a related incident, a Spanish fighter jet, part of a NATO patrol, intercepted and shot down a suspected Russian drone after it breached Romanian airspace, as confirmed by NATO officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of persistently targeting civilian infrastructure, stating that over the past week, Moscow launched upwards of 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine. This intensifying use of long-range weaponry by both sides raises the potential for increased casualties and damage in areas far from the front lines.
